The Pillar of Health is in the Gut

I often talk with my clients about the importance of how an healthy microbiome (friendly bacteria and Yeats and their genetic material) affects our health.

The reason why I believe this to be an important topic is because there is mounting scientific evidence that confirms the need of a balanced digestive system in order to protect us from diseases. Why your gut health is so important:

  • The gut houses 70% of your immune system

  • It is connected through the vagus nerve to the brain

  • It is highly susceptible to our emotions (often called our second brain). It has neurotransmitters receptors. We can all experience this.. when we say "I have a gut feeling.." or "I've had a rough week and my bowels are somehow upset".

  • The gut hosts the microbiome (when healthy, it produces a range of vitamins and minerals that we are not able to manufacture by ourselves)

  • The health of the microbiome is linked to the quality and quantity of food ingested Here we will have a look at 7 most common signs of an unhealthy Gut

  1. Upset Stomach ( e.g. bloating, abdominal pain, gas, nausea, acidic reflux)

  2. Unbalanced Diet (high in sugars, ultra processed foods, lack of fibre & fresh fruits and vegetables)

  3. Unintentional weight changes

  4. Sleep Disturbances and Constant Fatigue

  5. Skin Irritations

  6. Autoimmune Conditions

  7. Food Intolerances

There are a number of ways you can improve your gut health, you can try the followings:

  1. Manage your stress levels (through yoga and meditation)

  2. Get enough sleep

  3. Eat slowly

  4. Change your diet if appropriate

  5. Stay hydrated

  6. Check for food intolerances

  7. Reduce the number of coffees and fizzy drinks

  8. Taking prebiotics and probiotics (check with your health care professional which type would be best for you).
